MENA Newswire News Desk: The European Commission has announced a €25 million funding initiative aimed at supporting Member States in facilitating the voluntary return of non-EU nationals who do not have the legal right to remain in the European Union. The funding, provided under the Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund (AMIF), will assist countries facing pressures in their return systems by enhancing their capacity-building efforts and promoting voluntary returns. Member States participating in the AMIF are eligible to apply for funding until 15th November 2024.

The initiative is part of the European Union’s broader efforts to establish a more effective and unified system for managing returns under the Pact on Migration and Asylum. This pact, which includes provisions for voluntary returns, seeks to address migration challenges by creating a coordinated response that is fair, humane, and effective. Voluntary return and sustainable reintegration are core elements of the EU’s common returns system. Programmes such as Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) allow migrants to return to their countries of origin in a dignified and secure manner, considering the individual needs and circumstances of the returnees.

These programmes also provide support for reintegration, helping returnees to establish a new start in their home countries with proper assistance for housing, employment, and education. The EU Return Coordinator is working closely with Member States to ensure the success of these initiatives. The coordinator collaborates with the High-Level Network for Returns, a body designed to oversee and support the implementation of voluntary return strategies across the EU.

This network plays a critical role in aligning national efforts with the EU’s common objectives for managing migration effectively. Countries facing increased pressure due to high numbers of migrants without legal status are particularly encouraged to apply for funding. The goal is to improve the efficiency and humane handling of returns, providing an alternative to forced returns, which often pose challenges for both Member States and migrants.

By opting for voluntary return schemes, countries can reduce costs and administrative burdens while ensuring compliance with human rights standards. Member States that wish to participate in this funding opportunity must submit their applications through the designated channels before the 15th November 2024 deadline. For more information and to access the full terms and conditions, eligible countries can visit the European Commission’s funding portal. This initiative reflects the European Union’s commitment to creating a sustainable and cooperative approach to migration, balancing the need for security with respect for human dignity and the rule of law.
